Weight Update--Keeping Chin Up

I was not happy with the news from Weight Watchers today.  Someone suggested for me to get more protein so I will try that this week.  Protein is always a concern since I am a pescatarian (eat fish and veggies, no land meat).  Anyway, I send good thoughts to others on the same quest for healthy weight loss!

Weight Resolution: Progress Note

I lost three pounds this week!  I am very excited.  Unfortunately, the week before, I gained a pound.  So, I need to lose three more pounds to win the bet with my sister.  One way to success is several healthy but delicious recipes.  My next goal, then, is to expand my recipe repertoire!  Good luck to all of you in the weight war!

Wickedly Good--A Night at The Academy

Staring down the steep stair case, vertigo struck. All that was between me and an audience full of people twenty feet below was this metal rail. I had a feeling that if I wasn't careful, I would become the major attraction of the show! Anyone who has been to the Academy of Music in Philadelphia and has sat in the amphitheater knows what I am talking about.

However, I managed to make my way to the seat without tumbling to my death. And, I am glad I did because what a show!

I went to see "Wicked" with my book club. We are eight women, known as the Grapes of Cath (Cathy hatched the idea for the group and organized it). I read the book by Gregory McGuire back in grad school at the recommendation of my friend Veronica. I absolutely loved it. I love literature from the perspective of one of the other characters. (Jean Rhys did this type of literature for Bronte's Jane Eyre called Wide Sargasso Sea which is the novel's story told from the perspective of the crazy wife in the attic.) What was amazing about the novel was the political intrigue and the moral ambiguity which is more reflective of the real world than the simple good and evil of the original Wizard of Oz. I definitely plan on reading his other novels "Son of a Witch" and "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister".

While the musical could not capture the complexities and undercurrents of the novel, it did stay true to the perspective of the Wicked Witch, presenting her as a likeable, sympathetic character. Rarely can a movie or musical capture all that a book can. The advantage though, that movies and musicals seem to have over books is the opportunity for feasting the eyes and ears. As someone who loves musicals, I really enjoyed both the visual aspects and the music of "Wicked". It was a truly entertaining experience. The Academy of Music in Philly was also a great experience. Would I go there again to see other shows? I'll give a wicked yes to that!

Weight Resolution--A Pound of Flesh (or more!)

Well, like everyone else, I have made resolutions for 2010. One of those resolutions, like many others, is to lose some weight. Weight has been an ongoing struggle for me for several years. The main reason is my passion for chocolate (and stress eating) which I talked about last February

I have gone down about 12 pounds in two years of being a Weight Watcher. I know that many of you are thinking, what!, that's it! just 12 pounds in two years! It has definitely been an up and down journey. I am not upset about it because if I wasn't in the program, I most likely would have gained a huge amount of weight. The program stopped me in the process of eating like a maniac. I was on the fast track to obesity.

I gained a couple of pounds over this Christmas Holiday. So, now, it is time to refocus. My sister and I are going to motivate each other. The first person to lose five pounds gets a book or cd bought by the other person. She does not need to lose as much as I do. She recently lost like thirty pounds. She is an exercise fiend, so all she had to do to shed the pounds was change her diet and portions, which she did quite successfully. I need to ammend my diet and exercise more often. I hope that I win this one!

I'd love to hear your major resolutions and I will keep you updated on my progress.
